The Hummingbird Experience
I was out watering my Crape Myrtle tree earlier which, altho I just planted it this spring and it's no bigger than a shrub, has decided to bloom.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a shadow flicker out of view. I thought "Durn, that's a pretty big wasp!", as we've been inundated with bees, wasps, hornets, beetles, dragon flies, and all sortsa winged buzzy things. I kept watering the Crape Myrtle.
Water ... water ... water ...
I'm looking down at the shrub-sized tree, and when I look up - about three feet in front of my face is a hummingbird! My first reaction is "Oh, shit! Am I wearing something red?" thinking it was going to attack me. It just hovered there, flitted about an inch or two in each direction. I imagined that long pointy beak poking out my eyeball, or something as horrific ... then wondered when I got so sick-minded. *laugh* There was nothing scary about it, she just looked curious. She looked at me, and I looked at her.
It was the oddest experience!!

One of these pesky little winged thingies decided to attack my friend in the pool last summer. We thought it was a really BIG horsefly and kept swatting at it, but it must have made three passes before we realized it was a hummingbird. You just never know what will make one of them go off the deep end. ;)
